The 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Is a Top Safety Pick

December 24th, 2020 by

The 2021 Ram 1500 is slowly making its way to dealerships nationwide as the new model year quickly approaches and the Crew Cab configuration of the model is the latest in the lineup to earn an award. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) deemed the 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab a 2020 Top Safety Pick. 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab pickups with available Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking technology paired with adaptive LED projector headlamps with high-beam assist earned the vehicle the Top Safety Pick rating. This marks the first time a pickup earns this rating under a new-and-improved IIHS testing regimen that’s only become more stringent on safety.

“The Ram 1500’s Top Safety Pick win affirms FCA’s longstanding commitment to robust engineering innovation as a means to serve our customers. Such rigor helps us deliver on Ram’s unique combination of ruggedness, utility, and refinement,” said Mike Koval Jr., Head of Ram Brand.

IIHS added Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking as the latest requirement to earn Top Safety Pick status. Ram Truck builds on the truck’s existing sensor-fusion Automatic Emergency Braking system as it incorporates the technology into its adaptive system. The automaker’s technology achieved an “advanced” rating from the IIHS. Sensor-fusion technology combines radar sensors with the latest camera technology to dictate whether an impact with an oncoming vehicle is imminent. After multiple alerts without a response from the driver the system eventually automatically deploys the vehicle’s brakes to avoid an impact or reduce its seriousness.

Software changes were necessary to accommodate Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking, thus the radar technology is now programmed to identify pedestrians as well. If a collision with a pedestrian also feels imminent, just like when a collision with a car appears imminent, the vehicle will automatically deploy the system and reduce the risk and severity of impact should it come to that. The system’s response is dependent on conditions such as proximity and speed. The Ram 1500’s available Advanced Safety Group package, which includes Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking, also comes with Lane Departure Warning-Plus, Blind-Spot Monitoring with trailer coverage, Rear Cross Path Detection, and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop, Go and Hold.

The Automatic Emergency Braking feature earned the highest rating available: “superior,” according to IIHS and its test results. Standard on the Laramie, Rebel, Longhorn, Limited Longhorn and Limited trims of the Ram 1500, the Automatic Emergency Braking safety feature redefines what buyers can expect from modern pickups. Additionally, the feature is available on the Tradesman and Bighorn trims as well as long as they also have the Level 1 Equipment Group package. The 2021 Ram 1500 underwent six IIHS crashworthiness tests, three of which were frontal impact crashes, while the rest were consistent with side impact, rear impact and rollover simulations. The Ram 1500 Crew Car proudly earned the highest possible rating in each.
