As promised, Ram debuted the next-generation Ram 1500 DT at the North American International Auto Show and it’s new features are pretty significant. Changes Ram made to the Ram 1500 DT make the truck a significantly more modern, more fuel efficient, and a leader in the light-duty truck class.
2019 Ram 1500 DT Changes
Fuel Economy Improvements
To improve the truck’s fuel economy, Ram made a lot of changes to the exterior and engine. The Ram 1500 DT is 225 pounds lighter than the previous generation 1500 and 100 pounds of the truck’s weight loss is due to the truck’s new frame. Though the new frame is lighter, it is extremely durable as it features 98 percent high-strength steel. The lighter and more durable frame also increases the Ram 1500’s maximum towing and payload capacities to 12,750 pounds (towing capacity) and 2,300 pounds (payload capacity). Other exterior changes include a new class-exclusive air suspension as well as a more aerodynamic design that has improved drag, as well as active grille air shutters, an active dam and an active air suspension.
In addition to exterior changes, there are also new powertrain options. The 3.6-liter V6 engine and 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engines both have a new eTorque mild hybrid system. The eTorque mild hybrid system provides the 1500 with a stop/start function as well as regenerative braking tech thanks to the system’s 48-volt battery and belt-drive motor generator unit. In addition to improving fuel economy, the new eTorque system also increases the amount of torque the engine produces. With the new eTorque mild hybrid system, the 3.6L engine produces an additional 90 lb-ft of torque and the 5.7L HEMI engine produces an additional 130 lb-ft of torque.
Entertainment and Technology
Ram has new available features that make the Ram 1500 the most technologically advanced truck in the segment. One of the most eye catching changes is the new 12-inch reconfigurable touchscreen that is located in the center of the vehicle’s dashboard. To ensure the touchscreen as advanced as it looks, the Ram 1500 is equipped with the newest generation of Uconnect, which is FCA’s infotainment system. The new Uconnect system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, new SiriusXM features and 4G WiFi hotspot capability.
The new next-generation model is available with a 19-speaker Harman Kardon system and a 10-inch subwoofer, which is the industry’s most powerful audio system. To make it easier for the driver and passenger to charge their mobile devices there are new multi-function USB ports as well as an available wireless charging pad.
Safety Technology
Ram also made safety a priority when designing the next generation 1500 DT and there are now more than 100 safety and security features available. Drivers have the convenience of an aerial view of the truck with the new 360-degree Surround View Camera, which is a great feature when carrying large objects in the truck bed or towing. The truck is also available with preventative safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning-Plus, LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus and ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park and Hill-Start Assist.
Exterior and Interior
The Ram 1500 is now available with three new longer frame lengths, which also increases the interior cabin space. The crew cab is available with a 144.5-inch wheelbase on Crew Cab short bed models; a 153.5-inch wheelbase on Crew Cab long bed models; and 140.5-inch wheelbase on Quad Cab long bed models. The truck’s bed height is 1.5 inches higher, the truck’s width is .5 inches wider and the bed rails are also 1.5 inches higher.
The Ram 1500 DT has several new interior features that really enhance the overall experience for the driver and passengers.
