Meet the Infotainment System of Dodge, Ram and Other FCA Brands

June 21st, 2017 by

Car tech and built-in infotainment systems are two of the most desired car features among Millennials and Baby Boomers and over the years, FCA has built it’s own infotainment system, Uconnect, and it offers consumers all the latest tech in the auto industry.

As the name implies, Uconnect, is an infotainment system to keep car owners and passengers “connected” and it does so with communication, navigation, and entertainment services. For the 2017 model year, each FCA vehicle is equipped with one of the three versions of Uconnect, Uconnect 5.0, Uconnect 8.4 and Uconnect 8.4 NAV and each version of Uconnect is paired to a touchscreen.

Uconnect 5.0

Uconnect 5.0 is the base Uconnect system and it is paired to a 5-inch touchscreen. Uconnect 5.0 has all of the basic features consumers want from any infotainment system including an AM/FM  radio, hands-free calling, Bluetooth audio streaming and hookups to mobile devices including an AUX outlet, USB hookup and SD card reader. Users can control their Uconnect system via the touchscreen located in the dashboard or the steering wheel-mounted audio controls. Vehicles that come equipped with satellite radio receive a one-year free subscription to SiriusXM radio, which has hundreds of channels for sports, music, news and talk shows.

Uconnect 8.4

Buyers that want a slightly more advanced built-in infotainment system can opt for Uconnect 8.4, which is paired to a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen. In addition to the features included with Uconnect 5.0, Uconnect 8.4 has Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and SiriusXM Guardian, which provides users with quick access to emergency services via the push of a button or if the vehicle experiences an accident. Uconnect 8.4 also features an HD radio, a Do Not Disturb function, which allows users to block out phone calls and texts so they don’t get distracted while driving. Users with Uconnect 8.4 can also access their vehicle’s Uconnect system via Uconnect Access, which is explained below.

Uconnect 8.4 NAV

Of the three Uconnect systems, Uconnect 8.4 NAV is the most advanced and it has all of the features Uconnect 8.4 has (including the 8.4-inch touchscreen) and then some. Vehicles equipped with Uconnect 8.4 NAV have five-years of complimentary access to SiriusXM traffic and navigation, which provides users with step-by-step navigation as well as the most up-to-date traffic reports to help drivers avoid traffic.Like Uconnect 8.4, users with Uconnect 8.4 NAV can also connect their mobile device to Uconnect Access.

Uconnect Access

Uconnect Access is a newer feature to Uconnect and it is an app that users with Uconnect 8.4 and 8.4 NAV can download on their mobile device. Via the Uconnect Access app, users have access to certain car features, such as locking and unlocking their vehicle’s doors, using the app’s engine remote start feature to remotely turn on their vehicle, use the app’s Yelp search for local business recommendations and directions, as well as voice texting. Users can also use Uconnect Access to turn their vehicle into a WiFi hotspot, but WiFi capability is an additional charge.
