Equipment Choices on Ram 1500 + Towing Capacities

October 19th, 2016 by

The Ram 1500 is a light-duty truck that is available in many different configurations. Whether you need a truck for towing, for the open space in the truck bed or for the family, the Ram 1500 lineup has you covered. From cab size to axle ratio to three engine choices, Ram 1500 models can be tailored for your exact needs. Here is a quick overview on how various equipment effects towing capacity and a comparison of towing capacities with different specs.

Ram 1500 Options

The Ram 1500 is available in three different cab sizes including the two-door regular cab, and four-door quad cab and crew cab. The Ram 1500 is available as 4X4 or 2X4 and there are three engine options. Engines include the standard 3.6-liter V6 engine, a 5.7-liter V8 engine, and a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine. In regards to trim levels, there are a variety of trim level options and the available ones change based on the cab size, engine size and drivetrain.

Factors of Towing Capacity

The three factors that have the most effect on towing capacity are cab size, engine, and axle ratio.

Engine size and type is a big factor in a vehicle’s towing capacity. Generally speaking, the bigger the engine, the higher the towing capacity. Also, diesel engines can tow more than gas engines of the same size because of they typically deliver more torque.

Cab size and a truck’s equipment also have an impact on towing capacity because the heavier a truck is, the less it can tow. The engine does not only need to move what is being towed, but also the truck itself. The more the truck weighs, the more the engine needs to work and therefore, the less it can tow. So typically trucks with smaller cabs, like the regular two-door cab, have a greater towing capacity than four-door cabs.

Axle ratio refers to the gears in the truck’s differential, which is a mechanical device that links the rear axle to the driveshaft and then the engine, and axle ratio has a lot to do with towing capacity. The higher the axle ratio, the higher the towing capacity because the engine is able to turn the axle more revolutions with less power. However, greater axle ratios are less fuel efficient because the engine revs higher. It also limits top end speed. Though, we don’t believe top end speed is something most truck owners are concerned about.

Ram has a standard axle ratio of 3.21 on 2X4 trucks and 3.55 on 4X4 trucks and trucks with the diesel engine. However buyers can choose different axle ratios for their Ram 1500, including a 3.92 axle ratio.
