University Dodge 2022 Ram 1500 ClassicWhen it comes to buying a new truck, many prospective buyers rely on expert reviews to gain valuable insight. Automotive critics often serve as a valuable resort with their detailed specifications and model comparisons, as well as first-hand driving experience, and craftsmanship assessments. However, it’s important to note that every potential buyer’s needs and preferences can vary greatly, making it challenging for automotive experts to really tackle every angle. Take for instance the 2023 Ram 1500 Classic–to some it’s a relic that ought to be put out to pasture, but to others the model is an ideal work truck. Such diverse opinions highlight the subjective nature–not to mention driver’s needs– of pickup selection and the importance of considering individual requirements when evaluating a model for purchase.

2023 Ram 1500 Classic

According to a trusted Edmunds review, the 2023 Ram 1500 Classic is part of the fourth-generation of Ram pickups; initially introduced in 2009. Although 14 years under this generation’s belt won’t classify it as an antique, the model does possess a specific charm. Notably, when compared to the fifth-generation (non-Classic) Ram 1500 that followed, the advancements in driver-assist safety tech features are evident. Here’s where the two models experienced a notable evolution between generation changes:

While the Ram 1500 Classic offers buyers a more affordable option compared to the fifth-generation Ram 1500 in all its configurations, any price changes are reasonable to justify any upgrades. Labeling the 2023 Ram 1500 Classic an overpriced antique is not only harsh, it’s also wrong. The fifth-generation Ram 1500 undeniably comes with advanced tech upgrades and other impressive features, but the Ram 1500 Classic excels in areas where the latest generation may fall short. In fact, prospective buyers looking for a Ram 1500 will learn the only option of a single cab pickup with an eight-foot truck bed is the Ram 1500 Classic.

The truck maker’s Ram 1500 Classic lineup includes the Tradesman and Warlock trims, which offer both Crew and Cab configurations. In most cases, these extended cab options come with either 67- or 76-inch bed lengths, but the long bed option is unavailable. Buyers interested in a Crew or Quad Cab configuration with shorter beds and more technology should look to the Ram 1500 for answers, but buyers looking for an incredible work horse will be more than happy to be behind the wheel of a Ram 1500 Classic. Prices for the newer models range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars more than the existing Classic model, as evidenced by Ram’s online truck build tool.

Ram Truck made the decision to continue producing the Classic lineup of Ram 1500 pickups to cater to buyers who were either unwilling or unable to afford the higher price tag of the fifth-generation Ram 1500 when the model was first introduced in 2019. However, the Ram 1500 Classic managed to find its niche and remains profitable for the brand. The combination of profitability and consumer demands represents a significant achievement for any automaker and Ram is not going to shy away from said success.

While the 2023 Ram 1500 Classic is not the optimal choice for every driver, it’s still an excellent option for those who need a simpler pickup at a more budget-friendly price. Instead of imagining the Ram 1500 Classic as a relic that’s overstayed its welcome, buyers can learn to see it as the more experienced and wiser pickup in the Ram Truck lineup.
