The Dodge Challenger Reigned Supreme in 2021

January 10th, 2022 by

Congratulations are in order as the Dodge Challenger officially dethroned the Ford Mustang as the best-selling muscle car in the U.S.. The Mustang’s streak (that started in 2015) abruptly came to its natural end when Dodge sold 54,314 units of its Challenger model. A 3 percent increase over its 2020 numbers, Dodge is poised to continue its dominance throughout 2022. Ford, on the other hand, sold a total of 52,414 units of its Mustang model, marking a record decline of 12.4 percent when compared to its 2020 figures. 2021 was the Mustang’s worst sales performance in the model’s history.

Both the Challenger and Mustang were met with production issues due to supply shortages, while the factory where the Mustang is assembled also took a hit and experienced some downtime due to a gasoline leak nearby. Their common rival, the Chevrolet Camaro, was left in the dust, selling only 21,893 units throughout 2021. Dodge is of course looking to keep its crown in 2022 and the automaker is sure to reach that goal thanks to the recently launched Never Lift campaign. Dodge’s Never Lift campaign focuses on the brand’s performance vehicles and will see numerous special edition trims debut prior to the introduction of Dodge’s all-electric muscle car in 2024.

2022 Dodge Challenger

For the 2022 model year Dodge didn’t make any huge changes to the Challenger lineup. In fact, the only difference between the 2021 and 2022 Dodge Charger lineup is the availability of a deluxe security alarm for the R/T Scat Pack trim. Dodge also added its new deluxe security alarm feature to its Convenience Group Package. Automotive experts recommend the R/T Scat Pack model because of its powerful 485 horsepower HEMI V8 engine paired with the automatic eight-speed transmission. Adaptive dampers are also recommended as they improve overall ride quality.

Dodge offers the Plus Package that adds plenty to the interior, including ambient lighting, nicer materials on the dashboard and doors, and faux-suede seat inserts. The Plus Package is paired with the Driver Convenience Group as well, adding rear-cross-traffic alerts, high-intensity-discharge headlights, and blind-spot monitoring. With a classic muscle car interior, the Dodge Challenger hones in on its 1970s roots and pairs that with comfortable and modern accommodations. Other pony cars are no match for the Dodge Challenger as it is the only one in its segment with a far roomier cabin, along with back seats that actually accommodate adults without compromising comfort. Dodge also offers an extra seven cubic feet when compared with the Camaro, helping the Challenger lug two more luggage bags than the competition. The 2022 Dodge Challenger also offers buyers a big center console that doubles as a useful spot for a smartphone.
