Stellantis Unveils STLA Platform For Future Dodge EVs

Stellantis introduced its upcoming STLA Large, a revolutionary, highly adaptable, Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)-oriented platform serving as the underpinning for a diverse array of upcoming vehicles destined for global markets within the D and E segments. This platform boasts numerous segment-leading features, including integrated energy systems, efficient charging, high-performance vehicle dynamics, and Trail Rated off-road driving capabilities. The foundational STLA Large platform will debut with full-size vehicles, meeting the core demands of customers in key global markets. Initial implementation will take place in the North American market under the Dodge and Jeep brands, with subsequent releases planned for other brands such as Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, and Maserati. A total of eight vehicles are slated for launch between 2024 and 2026.

Engineering

The STLA Large platform has been meticulously engineered to provide unmatched technological flexibility, allowing for a higher degree of vehicle diversity and top-tier quality. This is achieved through a foundational set of components that ensures customer satisfaction. The manufacturing processes are both robust and cost-efficient, designed for replication across multiple assembly plants. The upcoming product lineup will encompass a comprehensive range of vehicle types, spanning from cars to crossovers to SUVs. Customers can anticipate the electric propulsion advantages of instant torque response paired with zero emissions. Brand-specific product announcements are scheduled to commence later this year.

“Our goals for our STLA platforms are ambitious but this is what our customers need from us today. Creating a family of vehicles from a well-engineered set of components that is flexible enough to cover multiple vehicle types and propulsions, overperforming any of our current products, will address each of our iconic brands’ customers. The flexibility and agility of this platform is its hallmark and will be a driving force for our success in the shift to electrification in North America,” Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said.

The inherent flexibility of the platform allows engineers and designers to tailor the wheelbase, overall length, overall width, height, and ground clearance. Various suspension modules and powertrain cradles can be utilized to align with specific vehicle performance goals, encompassing ride quality, handling, and comfort. Critical dimensions, including the front spindle to the driver foot, front and rear overhang, and passenger compartment floor, can be finely adjusted by engineers to optimize vehicle capabilities and performance.

The adaptability extends to the propulsion systems of the unibody platform. STLA Large is purposefully crafted as a native Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) platform, offering the choice between 400-volt and 800-volt electric architectures. The three-in-one electric drive modules (EDMs), integrating the motor, power inverter, and gear reduction, can be arranged in front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive, and all-wheel-drive configurations. Employing silicon carbide semiconductor technology, the power inverter is designed to minimize power losses. Additionally, the performance of the propulsion system can be enhanced over the vehicle’s lifespan through over-the-air software updates.

Over the next decade, Stellantis is committing to an investment exceeding €50 billion in electrification efforts. This initiative is aimed at fulfilling ambitious targets, including achieving a 100 percent passenger car Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales mix in Europe and a 50 percent mix for passenger cars and light-duty trucks in the United States by the year 2030. To meet these sales objectives, the company is securing around 400 GWh of battery capacity, supported by six battery manufacturing plants located in North America and Europe. Stellantis is set to introduce 48 BEVs to the market by 2024 and is steadfast in its pursuit to become a carbon net-zero corporation by 2038, encompassing all scopes, with a commitment to single-digit percentage compensation for any remaining emissions.
