ARTS AND CULTURE

Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club Highwaymen Art Show & Sale

Sunday, June 5 in Ft Lauderdale
The Florida Highwaymen are a group of 26 African Americans that were self-taught landscape artists in Florida, operating from the 1950s through the 1980s. The Highwaymen created over 200,000 inexpensive landscape paintings using construction materials rather than traditional art supplies that were sold in towns and cities and along roadsides throughout Florida, out of the trunks of their cars. Dubbed as the “The Last Great American Art Movement of the 20th century,” this group of artists broke many cultural barriers.

The event will include a meet and greet with four of the original Highwaymen, free appraisals of Highwaymen paintings, a live painting demonstration, and a raffle for an original Highwaymen painting. Visit  bit.ly/1XKjtD2.
