University Dodge - Ramcharger

The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger makes a bold comeback, reviving a nameplate last seen on Dodge SUVs in the late 1980s. This innovative full-size pickup bridges the gap between a traditional hybrid and a pure electric vehicle (EV). Compared to competitors like the Ford F-150 hybrid and the Rivian R1T, the Ramcharger occupies a unique space in terms of complexity. It boasts a powerful all-wheel-drive system generating a combined 663 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque. While sharing the electric Ram 1500 REV’s body-on-frame platform, the Ramcharger employs a distinct approach. Unlike the REV’s dual electric motors, it utilizes a gasoline-powered V-6 engine that functions solely as a generator.

Range Anxiety Eliminated

Addressing the concern of range anxiety, the Ramcharger seamlessly transitions to a gas-powered generator when the battery depletes. This not only extends the overall driving range but also injects additional power when needed. Furthermore, retaining the ability to plug into a DC fast charger, similar to a conventional EV, enhances its versatility. Ram estimates the Ramcharger to deliver an impressive 145 miles of pure-electric range. This innovative approach positions the Ramcharger as a compelling alternative to the purely electric Ram 1500 REV. It caters to drivers accustomed to gas-powered vehicles who might not be ready to fully embrace an EV lifestyle, offering a comfortable transition with the added benefit of extended range and the familiarity of a gasoline engine for on-the-go power.

What to Expect in 2025

The Ramcharger name returns in 2025, resurrecting a legendary moniker last seen adorning a rugged off-road SUV in 1993. This revival signifies a monumental shift towards alternative energy within the Ram truck lineup. While sharing the body of the gas-powered Ram 1500, the Ramcharger boasts a cutting-edge plug-in hybrid powertrain, offering a unique solution for drivers seeking both efficiency and extended range. Adding a touch of visual intrigue, the Ram 1500 Ramcharger also features Ram’s alternate logo, which illuminates during the charging process.

Engine & Performance

The Ramcharger’s powertrain is a unique blend of gasoline and electric power. Similar to a plug-in hybrid, it utilizes a 3.6-liter V-6 engine, but with a twist. This engine doesn’t directly power the wheels. Instead, it acts as a range extender, functioning like a generator to create electricity for the battery pack.

This battery then takes charge, supplying power to the front and rear electric motors that form the truck’s all-wheel-drive system. This innovative setup delivers an impressive combined output of 663 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque. Ram estimates a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.4 seconds, putting the Ramcharger within striking distance of the monstrous 702-hp Ram 1500 TRX in terms of sheer power.
