Events and Festivals Around South Florida in July

South Florida in July is definitely hot, but that’s no reason not to get outside and do something fun. Here’s a list of some of the fun events going on around South Florida this month, just be sure to stay cool.

4th of July Celebrations, Fireworks and Parades

This year, 4th of July falls on a Monday, which makes for an awesome 3-day weekend to celebrate Independence Day. There’s tons of events and firework displays scheduled around South Florida. 

Shakespeare by the Sea

July 7-10 and July 14-17 at the Seabreeze Amphitheatre in Jupiter
This year at the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival, Shakespeare by the Seas presents “Taming of the Shrew” in two weekends of performances. The play takes place outside, so people are encouraged to bring blankets, beach chairs and food and drinks to unwind under the stars. pbshakespeare.org

Annual Underwater Music Festival

July 9, Looe Key Reef outside of Big Pine Key
Each year in July, hundreds of boats and divers attend the underwater music festival held at the Looe Key Reef, located in the Florida Keys Reef Tract about six miles from Big Pine Key. A group of snorkelers and divers dress up as mermaids and mermen and “play” instruments underwater. The event is held to benefit and bring awareness to the importance of coral reefs around the world and even in our own backyard.

Hemingway Days

July 19-24, various locations in Key West
For the last 36 years, Key West has been the host of a slew of Hemingway-themed events scheduled during a seven day period around Ernest Hemingway’s birthday in July. Events include a “Running of the Bulls,” a marlin tournament, a Papa Look-Alike contest, and a short story contest.

Mini Lobster Season and BugFest By-The-Sea

July 27-28
Each year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation give open up a special 2-day window allowing divers to to get in the water and get some of the world famous Florida Spiny Lobster. During the mini lobster season, divers are limited to 12 lobsters per day. The official lobster season opens Aug. 6 and stays open until March 31.

Held in conjunction with mini lobster season is Bugfest By-The-Sea, held in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. The 4-day festival includes special seminars, contests and the “Big Florida Big Hunt.”
