Another September of Fun in South Florida
School is back in session, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. As the summer slowly starts to cool down, there are plenty of local events scheduled. Check out what’s scheduled South Florida in September!
44th Annual Phil Peterson’s Key West Poker Run
Sept. 15-18, various locations in the Florida Keys and Key West
Bikers rejoice! Phil Peterson’s Key West Poker Run is back! Decked out in leather and bandanas biker enthusiasts will be rumbling down the Florida Keys Overseas Highway in a fleet of awesome motorcycles. Before everyone makes it all the way down to Key West, there are multiple stops arranged throughout the different Keys districts.
Riverwalk Fall Festival
Sept. 24 in Fort Lauderdale
To remind South Floridians, that the feeling of fall temps are back in other parts of the nation, Fort Lauderdale has the Riverwalk Fall Festival. Though warm temperatures are the norm, the free festival features fall-themed carnival games, activities and competitions. There’s also plenty to eat and great live music.
Sept. 29- Oct. 2, various locations in Key Largo
Scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking and paddleboarding. What more can you ask for? This year Key Largo, also known as the “Diving Capital of the World” is bringing back Reef Fest, a five-day event for water and outdoors enthusiasts. Activities include seminars, evening social gatherings, silent and live auctions and, of course, an up-close and personal look at the coral reefs located off of the coast of the Keys. All seminars are free, but pre-registration is recommended.
DWTWN Art Days
Sept. 9-11, various locations in Downtown Miami
This is one of Miami’s top free events. DWTWN Art Days is a three-day festival that includes a multitude of events, like live music and viewing cultural arts. Among some of the event highlights include the Wolfson’s Archive Open House, a Fifties Cocktail Party, and a “First Draft: Sticky Fingers Edition”, an event where guests can write short stories while eating sticky buns and sipping mimosas.
Alright, so these two events are not in South Florida, but we had to include them for our horse-lovin’ cowboys and cowgirls.
Horsey Yard Sale
Sept. 25-26 in Ocala
The horse capital of Florida, Ocala, hosts an annual “garage” sale of horse riding equipment and paraphernalia, and at deep discounts. Whether a Western or Equestrian rider, there will be a variety of gently used tack, stable equipment and clothing. After you shop till you drop, you’ll be in good company with other horse lovers eating burgers and hot dogs.
Ranch Rodeo and Free Cowboy Heritage Festival
Sept. 30- Oct. 1 in Kissimmee
This is a two-day rodeo that aims to give spectators a glimpse into the life of real working life of ranchers, cowboys and cowgirls. Aside from two nights of ranch rodeo finals, other competitions include a ranch horse competition and a working Florida cowdog competition. In addition to the events, there is also a free cowboy heritage festival that includes a tasty brisket cook-off.
