Challenger

Roaring into the 2017 model year are a handful of new Dodge Challenger models and the return of seven other trims. While three of the new models are the limited-edition models inspired by the 1970 Challenger T/A, one model, the Challenger GT AWD, is an all-new model featuring all-wheel-drive. Among other good news, the 2017 Challenger received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, so passengers and drivers can ride assured that they are well protected.

Engines and Trims

The 2017 Challenger lineup will consist of the same four engines that were available in 2015 and 2016. Regardless of engine, all models come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, but buyers have the option of upgrading to the TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission. The standard engine on the Challenger SXT and SXT Plus is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that produces 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. To optimize performance and fuel economy this engine has variable valve timing and it helps the 3.6L achieve 30 mpg on the highway.

The Challenger R/T, R/T Plus, R/T Shaker, R/T Plus Shaker, T/A and T/A Plus are all equipped with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine. Each cylinder features unique hemispherical combustion chambers, which improve engine performance because they provide more room for valves and decrease heat loss within the chamber. In all, this engine produces 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.

The Challenger R/T Scat Pack, T/A 392, SRT 392 Shaker Scat Pack and SRT 392 all feature the same 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine. This is the second most powerful engine on the lineup as it produces 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with this engine, the Challenger has a top speed of 182 mph and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in the low four-second range.

Finally, there is the all-powerful supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI SRT Hellcat V8 engine and it is only available on the Challenger SRT Hellcat trim. This engine produces 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, making it the Challenger SRT Hellcat the most powerful and fastest muscle car in the world. The Challenger SRT Hellcat has a top speed of 199 mph and can accelerate from 0-60 mph
